Expanding Cancer Supportive Care Services
Cancer is a journey no one should face alone. At Miami Valley Hospital Foundation, we recognize the profound impact cancer has not only on patients but also on their families and loved ones. To address the evolving needs of our community, we are developing a Cancer Supportive Care Clinic at Miami Valley Hospital South. This clinic will be a cornerstone of our commitment to providing comprehensive, compassionate care close to home.
Comprehensive Supportive Care
Our new comprehensive Cancer Supportive Care Clinic will include six essential components:
High-Risk Cancer Prevention Clinic: Targeting patients at high risk, the clinic will offer preventive measures, screenings, and education to catch cancer early or prevent it altogether.
Survivorship Clinic: Focusing on the physical, mental, emotional, social, and financial effects of cancer that begin at diagnosis and continue through treatment and beyond. The survivorship clinic will provide ongoing observation, management, and support from the time of diagnosis to the end of a patient’s life.
Cancer Nutrition Clinic: Nutrition plays a crucial role in cancer care. The clinic will offer tailored dietary advice and support from registered oncology dieticians to help patients during and after treatment.
Boutique: Understanding the emotional impact of hair loss and other physical changes, our clinic will feature a boutique offering a variety of high-quality compression garments, breast prostheses and bras, wigs, and hair alternatives. Additionally, the boutique will provide hats, headscarves, skincare products, fashion accessories, and clothing. This comprehensive service aims to give cancer patients a sense of normalcy and confidence, enhancing their comfort and dignity throughout their journey.
Outpatient Palliative Care Clinic: Addressing the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of patients, the clinic will provide palliative care to improve quality of life at any stage of the cancer journey.
Genetic Counseling: A consultation that helps patients explore their family histories and understand the impact genetics can have on their cancer risk. Based on an assessment of their personal and family history, recommendations can be made for a personalized screening program and, when appropriate, some patients might decide to have specific genes studied.
The Need
In 2024, it is estimated there will be well over 2 million new cancer cases and more than 600,000 cancer deaths in the United States. In Southwest Ohio, the demand for cancer services will grow 9% over the next five years, and up to 14% in the next 10 years. These numbers underscore the critical need for comprehensive, long-term support for cancer survivors.
Newly diagnosed patients and their families expect and deserve comprehensive supportive cancer care services that minimize treatment side effects and promote overall well-being. By establishing a structured program, we can significantly improve the early management, documentation, and continuity of care across Premier Health.
Enhancing Cancer Care Close to Home
Your support will enable us to renovate existing spaces and create a state-of-the-art center for cancer prevention and supportive care. This center will serve as a critical resource for patients, from those at high risk for cancer to those in active treatment and long-term survivors.
By contributing to this campaign, you will help Atrium’s oncology program strive toward becoming a best-in-class Comprehensive Cancer Center.
