The Valley Classic

Monday, August 9, 2010
NCR Country Club, Dayton, Ohio

The 20th anniversary Valley Classic golf tournament was a huge success for patients at MVH. For the second consecutive year the trounament was chaired by Arik Sherk, who led an 18-member volunteer committee. Nearly 200 golfers played nine holes on each NCR course, and enjoyed an awards dinner that evening at the clubhouse.

Since its inception, the tournament has raised more than $2.1 million in support of vital patient programs and services at Miami Valley Hospital. The Valley Classic began with 76 players at NCR Country Club raising $16,000 for the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Since then, numerous patient programs and hospital units have benefited from funds raised by the tournament including the Regional Chronic Kidney Dialysis and Transplant Center, the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program, and the Rehabilitation Institute of Ohio.

From 1995 to 1999, the hospital’s Shaw Emergency and Trauma Center was the sole beneficiary of nearly $1 million dollars in proceeds from the Valley Classic. Those funds went toward building construction and to outfit the state-of-the-art emergency facility.

Since 2000, the MVH Foundation Board — in conjunction with hospital management and the Valley Classic steering committee — has directed funding to programs that provide clinical services with a human touch. Proceeds from the annual tournament go toward expanding the Margin of Excellence for MVH patients — programs that go above and beyond what the hospital’s budget can accommodate. Programs benefiting from last year’s tournament include the MVH Palliative Care Program and the Diabetes Inpatient Team at the bull Family Diabetes Center.

The participation of individuals and organizations throughout southwestern Ohio has made a significant impact on the lives of thousands of patients at Miami Valley Hospital. A day of fellowship on the golf course translates into the creation or expansion of important patient programs and services — some of which might not exist at MVH or anyplace else in the community — if it weren’t for the funds raised through the tournament.

The success of the Valley Classic is due to the generous commitment from our corporate sponsors, players and volunteers. On behalf of the patients and families who benefit from that generous support, we extend our sincere thanks.
