MVH NICU
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) cares for more than 800 fragile newborn infants each year. Opened in May 2009, the newly renovated unit provides 60 private patient rooms and several family areas. The unit features innovative cutting-edge equipment like the Giraffe Omnibed – a developmentally-supportive, state-of-the-art incubator for critically ill infants. Research shows that handling premature infants for medical procedures should be very limited due to the risk of interrupting vital brain development. To reduce handling of neonates, the Omnibed provides access to the infant for medical procedures while lessening the effect of extraneous stimuli such as noise and light. The beds maintain constant heat and humidity levels to help the infant’s skin be less susceptible to infection. Most importantly, the Omnibed provides access for parents to touch and bond with their child without removing the infant from the bed.
Today, medical staff must choose based on acuity which infants receive the specialized incubator. Preferably, all infants should have the benefits of the new incubators. The NICU requires 60 Omnibeds, which are priced at $37,700 each. The hospital purchased 35 beds. The Foundation’s goal is to purchase the remaining 25 beds through donor contributions, and provide naming opportunities for individuals, businesses and families who want to partner with us to serve our region’s most critically-ill infants.
